Romanian German Course

A record-breaking edition of the Romanian-German Course

The 24th edition of the Romanian-German Course, which took place this year exclusively online between April 9-11 2021, managed to bring together over 20 specialists, Guest Lecturers, from Romania and Germany, specialists who shared with participants from their own professional experience gained over the years as well as in the field of research.

The theme chosen for this edition was Spinal Pathology, which includes for example congenital malformations, degenerative lesions, oncological diseases such as primary or secondary tumors or spinal cord injuries. These are just some of the topics covered in the course. The large number of patients suffering from degenerative diseases of the spine has made this topic a newsworthy one even though the medical field was “suffocated” by the Covid 19. pandemic. As the Co-chair of the course, Prof. Dr. Uwe Kehler said “we are not allowed to take breaks and interrupt our activity, because diseases do not take a break”, the Romanian-German course made it possible to share information from Romanian and German guests, to medical students, resident doctors and specialists from different areas of medical practice, through this online event.

The online format has made it easier to interconnect with more than 260 participants from different parts of the world, the largest number of participants registered in the history of this course, professionals working in specialized care in the field of neurosurgery, neurology, orthopedics-traumatology, oncology as well as representatives of medical companies. The course hosted 7 scientific sessions dedicated to experts and attended by German and Romanian lecturers mainly from neurosurgery centers in the country. A total of 37 presentations were held and each session concluded with a brief debate.

The young generation of doctors is actively supported by this course as it includes the Young Neurosurgeon’s Corner: a section dedicated to residents. This year, more than ever, this section included three scientific sessions which lasted a whole day. A total of 24 young doctors or medical students from different university centers in the country gave scientific presentations in the last day of this course. In the opinion of the Co-president of the Romanian-German Course, Prof. Ioan-Ștefan Florian, MD PhD “the big minus that the pandemic brought was the impossibility of organizing hands-on sessions and replacing them with simulated interventions”. However, even in these circumstances, the connection between experts and participants was tighter than ever so that the education and training of current generations, in this field, does not suffer. Unquestionably, the event was a success despite the harsh times we live in and allowed the medical academics to pass on the information obtained through research work, to students and resident doctors.

A considerable part of the success of this event was certainly due to the partners who respond promptly each time and to whom in this way the organizers thank:

Gold partners: Medtronic, Ronda Medical, Inomed.

Partners: Stryker, Zeiss, EnLife Neurosurgery

Media partners: Medical Market, Romedic, Medical Week, Jurmed-Journal of Health.

The event ended with the hope of returning to normalcy as soon as possible and to direct face to face interaction during these academic meetings.
